One of the most picturesque deserts in the world, Wadi Rum is a highlight of many guests’ adventures in Jordan. Its beauty has been immortalised by Hollywood in films such as Lawrence of Arabia. The contrast of the sandstone and granite mountains combined with the red of the sand creates an otherworldly landscape that is unforgettable.
The unique nature of the desert was recognised in 1997 with the establishment of the Wadi Rum Protected Area; in 2011 UNESCO placed Wadi Rum on the World Heritage List. This area encompasses 74,000 ha of natural beauty including the highest peak in Jordan, Mount Um Dami at 1,840 m.
Nearly all people living in Wadi Rum are of the Zalabia tribe. Many Bedouins still prefer the nomadic life with goat hair tents a common sight in the desert. Families often move site with their camels and goats in search of fresh grass or water. The traditional goat hair tents shrink in winter, allowing the heat to remain in the tent; expanding in summer to provide natural ventilation. A visit to Wadi Rum is not complete without sampling the hospitality of the Bedouins with the offer of tea, coffee or even a meal. You can be sure that this approach to hospitality is embraced by the Rumshines team.
Enjoy your stay!
